The desire for the evident and the unambiguous has applied to the inside of the body since the Renaissance at the latest. What lay hidden there within the coat of skin has been explored, systematised and charted.
Every symptom needed a reason and every reason needed a place. Even feelings that were hard to grasp became organic. In this way, melancholy could be traced back to the over-production of black bile, and to this day we literally love with our hearts.
In the meantime, all these impulses have been located in the brain. But anatomy will always remain exemplary. What is true for our own innards, remains a possibility. As long as we do not look inside.
